Stories That Heal: Art, Media, and Community Resilience

We’ve heard it said many times: Art has the power to transform.

In times of crisis, that power is magnified. Art and storytelling—so often interchangeable—become lifelines, offering comfort, expression, and a means of making sense of the unimaginable.

After Hurricane Helene, our community turned to art in countless ways. It became a way to process grief and loss, to give voice to experiences that words alone could not capture, and to share our stories with the outside world in hopes of finding understanding and support. Whether through visual art, music, performance, or film, creative expression carried us through the chaos and helped restore a sense of connection and humanity.

Today, art and media continue to be vital tools—not only for healing within our community but also for inviting others to see, listen, and engage with us in meaningful ways. They serve as bridges: from the personal to the collective, from the local to the global.

This conversation will explore how art and media can untangle the human spirit after crisis, offering pathways to healing, growth, and change. Together with artists, storytellers, and community leaders, we’ll discuss how creativity doesn’t just document what we’ve endured—it actively shapes how we move forward.

Facilitator Jessica Tomasin, a driving force in Asheville’s music and entrepreneurial scene and the founder of the Connect Beyond Festival, which brings musicians, filmmakers, authors, educators, and activists together for a weekend of creativity, dialogue, and social change. https://www.jessicatomasin.com
